The alarming statistics on cybercrime: protection urgently needed for German companies

A recent study commissioned by the digital association Bitkom reveals shocking figures: Year after year, the German economy suffers losses of 206 billion euros due to the theft of IT equipment and data as well as digital and analog industrial espionage and sabotage. This marks the third year in a row in which the damage has exceeded the alarming 200 billion euro mark (2022: 203 billion euros, 2021: 223 billion euros).

The study is based on surveys of more than 1,000 companies from various sectors and paints a worrying picture of the current threat situation. A remarkable 72 percent of all companies were affected by analog and digital attacks in the last twelve months, while a further 8 percent suspected attacks without being able to provide clear evidence. Although the total number of attacks fell slightly compared to the previous year, there was a significant increase in attacks attributable to organized crime in particular. An alarming 61 percent of the companies affected see the perpetrators in this area. A year ago, this figure was 51%, and two years ago it was only 29%.

Another worrying development is the increasing role of Russia and China as a starting point for attacks on the German economy. According to the study, 46 percent of the affected companies were able to trace attacks back to Russia, compared to 23 percent in the previous year. Similarly, 42 percent of attacks were recorded from China, compared to 30 percent in the previous year.
